Bachelors Degree in Physics
sorry, currently only available in english!
The Bachelors program consists of two semesters (one year) of introductory physics courses, mathematics lectures and the introductory laboratory course (total of 60 credit points (CP)) followed by four semesters (two years) of courses on experimental and theoretical physics, advanced laboratory courses, a proseminar plus a number of elective courses (total of 120 CP). The minimum time required to obtain a Bachelors degree in Physics is three years. To complete the all the requirements in three years, students usually feel that a full time commitment to working on courses and exercises is necessary, including a significant amount of time spent preparing for the comprehensive examinations. Admission as a part time student is possible but will of course prolong the time to obtain the Bachelors degree.
Admission
Many physics students start the Bachelors degree program after having obtained the Swiss Maturity Diploma upon completing high school (click here to find out how to apply). However, other paths to be admitted to our Bachelors degree program exist. Please visit the web-page of the admissions office of the University of Basel for detailed information. There is an application fee of CHF 100.--, and a late-fee of CHF 50.-- if the application deadline was missed.
International Students
The language of instruction of Bachelors courses generally is german, and proficiency of the german language most likely will be very important for successful completion of studies at the Bachelor level. The scientific language used at our department in the reserach groups is generally english, and participation in research projects will probably not require knowledge of german language. More information for international students is available here.
Currently, foreign Bachelors students staying in Switzerland on a student VISA need to be enrolled and are not usually allowed to work, except for a very limited time. Further, University rules do not allow employment of Bachelors students at the Departments. Therefore, Bachelors students need to bring the financial means to support themselves while studying towards a Bachelors degree. Part-time employment, for example as a student-aid, may in some cases be possible. However, funds earned in this way will not at all be sufficient to pay for the cost of living. Tuition at the University of Basel is currently CHF 700.--, click here for details.
