Nuclear, Particle and Astrophysics Seminar / Victor Maura Breick (King's Coll. London) Exploring the Zepto-scale: Physics Beyond the Standard Model at the Future Circular Collider
Speaker: Victor Maura Breick (King's Coll. London) Abstract: Physics at the TeV-scale, long heralded as the next step towards a deeper understanding of nature, is increasingly constrained by direct searches at the LHC, while indirect precision tests of the Standard Model naively rule it out. At the same time, the discovery of the Higgs boson has opened an entirely new avenue for precision exploration. Rather than being discouraged by the absence of new physics where it was once expected to be ubiquitous, we can interpret it as a hint towards its underlying structure. By studying the picture that emerges from this process of subtraction, a clearer path for future exploration begins to emerge. In this talk, I will explore the unique opportunities offered by the integrated Future Circular Collider programme in simultaneously addressing both challenges. I will illustrate how global analyses of experimental data within the framework of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT), complemented by a systematic study of linear SM extensions, can provide a unified perspective on the sensitivity of current and future colliders to new physics. Particular emphasis will be placed on the key role of the Tera-Z programme at FCC-ee. Finally, considering a dark sector coupled through the Higgs portal, I will explore how a potential discovery at the HL-LHC could be followed up by the integrated collider programme to disentangle the underlying nature of these interactions, even in this elusive scenario.
