NCCR SPIN: Spin Qubits in Silicon
The National Centre of Competence in Research "Spin Qubits in Silicon" (NCCR SPIN) is Switzerland’s national quantum computing program, focusing on developing small, fast, and scalable spin qubits in silicon and germanium exploring the fundamental quantum physics of the qubits and architectures connecting them as well as algorithms and error correction schemes to build a practical quantum computer.
Building a quantum computer represents a grand challenge of our time. While devices with a few qubits already exist, a universal quantum computer remains a distant prospect. Scalability is a major issue, and with current approaches, expanding from a few qubits to many remains extremely challenging.
Mission of NCCR SPIN: The Future of Silicon & Germanium Spin Qubits
The multidisciplinary effort involves physicists, materials scientists, engineers, and computer scientists working together on the full stack of quantum computing, spanning from hardware to algorithms and software. We are laying the foundations to build a practical quantum computer with high-fidelity gates and excellent scalability. For this, we are exploring the fundamental quantum physics of qubits, as well as architectures, algorithms, and error correction schemes. The long-term goal is a universal quantum computer.
