At its meeting on April 21, 2026, the University Council approved the Senate’s decision to appoint Dr. Philipp Schmidt-Wellenburg as adjunct professor of experimental elementary particle physics.
Philipp Schmidt-Wellenburg, senior scientist at the laboratory of particle physics at the CNM/PSI was appointed as adjunct professor of experimental elementary particle physics at the University of Basel, on April 21, 2026. Philipp is an internationally acclaimed researcher in the field of high precision physics searching for the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the muon and neutron.
Philipp studied physics at the Technical University of Munich and received his PhD in 2009 for a measurement of ultra-cold neutron production in pressurized superfluid helium. He joined PSI in 2009 as a tenure-track scientist in the ultra-cold neutron group at the Laboratory for Particle Physics. Following his role as Technical Coordinator of the neutron EDM (nEDM) experiment, he served as Co-Spokesperson of the collaboration until 2021. In 2018, he initiated the muon EDM search at PSI, for which he was awarded an ERC Consolidator Grant in 2022. From 2016 to 2022, he lectured on low-energy particle physics at ETH Zurich, before taking over the course “Introduction to Nuclear and Particle Physics” at the University of Basel.
Beyond his research and teaching, Philipp is actively engaged in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in physics. He currently chairs the DEI commission of the Swiss Physical Society and is involved in mentoring and outreach initiatives that support early-career scientists and broaden participation in the field.
