Daniel Loss to receive the 2024 Jan Czochralski Award
In recognition of his lifetime of research achievement in materials science, Daniel Loss, Professor of theoretical physics at the University of Basel, will be awarded the Jan Czochralski Award 2024 from the European Materials Research Society (E-MRS).
The award is named for Jan Czochralski, the most cited Polish scientist of all time. He created the Czochralski method for growing single crystals, which was an important step in producing semiconductor wafers when applied to germanium and silicon. Nearly all electronics that use semiconductors today still use materials created with the Czochralski method. The award will officially be presented at the E-MRS Fall meeting in Warsaw in September.
Daniel Loss is one of the world’s most frequently cited physicists. He is internationally renowned, especially for his development of the concept of using the spin of electrons in quantum dots as qubits. He is a Professor at the Department of Physics at the University of Basel, Co-Director of the NCCR SPIN, and Director of the Center for Quantum Computing and Quantum Coherence (QC2) in Basel.
