From 1970-1972 he was research associate at the CEN Saclay in France. He started in 1973 as postdoc at Basel University. During the year 1976-1977 he took a sabbatical at the Stanford Linear Accelerator. From 1978-1983 he was group leader in Basel, in 1983 he became professor in experimental physics. From 1993-2005 he had the position of a full professor at the University of Basel. Since 2005, he is emeritus professor.
