Daniel Malz studied natural sciences and mathematics at the University of Cambridge (UK), where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Natural Sciences and a Master of Mathematics. In 2018, he received his doctorate in theoretical physics from the same university. After completing his doctorate, he held postdoctoral research positions at the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics in Garching and briefly at the Technical University of Munich. Since 2023, he has been an assistant professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Copenhagen, where he pursues an independent research agenda in theoretical quantum physics. On February 1, 2026, Daniel Malz took up his position as assistant professor at the Hans-Otto Meyer Endowed Professorship for Theoretical Quantum Optics in the Department of Physics at the University of Basel.
Daniel Malz's research focuses on the theoretical understanding and control of complex quantum systems composed of many interacting particles. Working at the interface of quantum optics and quantum information theory, his group aims to understand fundamental quantum phenomena and develop new theoretical concepts for quantum technologies and quantum computing. The Hans Otto Meyer Foundation supports his professorship and enables the long-term promotion of his research agenda in the field of theoretical quantum physics.
